3 Methods of Self Care To Increase Your Productivity
Often when new clients come to me because they're stressed, or not making progress toward their goals, I find it stems from not placing enough emphasis on the right kind of self care.
You've run into too many barriers you couldn't overcome, heard the word "no" too many times...
..and the world starts to look very dull, overwhelming or depressing.
But indulging in self care at that point can often be counter-productive. Telling you to take a day at the spa because you're feeling burnt out and stressed isn't going to do you much good if you can't make your mortgage payment!

1. Lay Away.
The mind naturally steers away from pain and toward moments of enjoyment.
Reward yourself for accomplishment by placing an item on layaway, and making payments toward it each time you meet a set goal.
Don't think small here!
Pick an item of considerable worth, that would normally be quite far out of your reach financially. Then, pick a brick-and-mortar store that offers commission to the salesperson who lays away the article for you. Maybe its a fat diamond ring you've been eyeing for years, or the fancy sports car you always wanted.
By making a personal connection with the sales representative, you accomplish two things:
1. A self care system that trains your brain to associate achievement with tangible rewards,
2. An accountability partner who has a vested financial interest in seeing you accomplish your goal...so he/she can get that commission!
P.S. - The best part about layaway is that you can break a spendy item into easy doable payments. Make sure you set your targets small enough to be met on a regular basis, but big enough that you have to "push" just a little to make it happen!

2. Long Walks & People-Watching
We've all been taught not to stare at strangers, but what if I told you that people-watching is good for the soul?
For clients who spend a lot of time dealing with customers, I have often seen the toll this takes on their state of mind.
It does no good to make a tidy profit at the end of the day, if you go home to a partner or family so sick of 'people' that you can't enjoy it!
The solution is to regularly take long walks at the end of the day, and "people-watch".
Choose a crowded space if you can, and just look at person after person as you walk by.
Don't speak to them, just observe.
You will find yourself noticing more and more about people, which can also help you in the sales process later! Do this until you feel less upset and eager to speak to your loved ones with a more even keel.

3. Get Into Action!
Your hormones & emotions are intimately connected. When you've sat a long day in the office, or worked in front of a screen for hours, the mental stress can be relieved by getting into action with some strenuous physical activity.
Try a short sprint at your fastest pace, a competitive sport, or join a gym to get the adrenals pumping!
This not only reduces the stress, but can increase your mental speed and alertness, leading to further productivity.
Pro Tip - Exercise which also helps others, such as unloading boxes for a food bank, building a treehouse for the kids, or helping a friend renovate the kitchen, will be found to reduce the most stress.
Putting your attention on the problems of another, particularly someone with a much more troubling or larger issue than you feel, can help put the barriers in better perspective.
